All travel for the Northeastern leg of Freedom Drive 2002 is to be completed on Wednesday, 11/13 unless otherwise noted. This would only apply to those from the far north of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, or New York. Travel times were taken from Yahoo! Travel. The plan calls to stay north of Frederick MD for the evening of Wednesday, 11/13 and join up with the Main Drive at the fairgrounds for a rally. Time estimates are conservative, barring weather problems. Other Northeast drivers within the commuting distance of DC are urged to coordinate their efforts and arrive in DC at 8 AM and join the DC Freedom Drive "loop" Meeting point leaders are still needed for Bangor, Concord, Boston, Providence, Springfield, Hartford, Burlington, Hempstead/ Long Island, Syracuse (early and late), Allentown, and the Delaware rest area. If there are no volunteers for these stops they will be eliminated, except the stop in Delaware. Times are already set to arrive and depart. Meeting point leaders should arrive early, be visible, and direct people toward gas and/or food. If meeting point leaders are not established for these locations, proceed to the next stop from where you would be. Please email jbretton_wtp@yahoo.com to volunteer your time and/or a location.The main caravan staging points are Charlton/Worcester, Bridgeport, Ridgefield/NYC, Philadelphia, and the Delaware rest area. Suggested departure times for other locations should enable you to catch up with the feeder route caravans at the rendezvous/event areas that have been indicated. In summary, the Northeast corridor route for Freedom Drive 2002 winds its way mostly down I-95, with a few changes to allow for avoiding traffic. Road directions are posted at the bottom and will be available to those who join the caravan at the main caravan points. After eastern New England leaves Charlton, the group will proceed down to Bridgeport to join up with those from western New England and Rhode Island. The route then proceeds to Ridgefield, NJ, to join up with those from eastern up-state New York, northern New Jersey, and Long Island. This area will serve as a lunch and gas break, as well. The larger caravan will then proceed into Philadelphia, where a mini-rally will take place. See details of the rally below and directions for the main line of the caravan at the bottom. Those from Pennsylvania and Syracuse can discover their own way. After the rally, we will scatter down I-95 at the beginning of rush hour, only to regroup at the Delaware rest are on I-95, just south of Exit 3. The reformed caravan will then proceed to It is recommended that people bring a cooler in their car, as long lines for food will dramatically slow us down, and we are on a fairly tight schedule. The schedule may get us to the Howard County Fairgrounds before he main caravan arrives around 6-7 PM, which may give time to check into hotels beforehand -- but don’t count on it. The route includes a mini-rally in Philadelphia, at the Independence Park Welcome Park at the corner of 2nd and Walnut. The plan is for people to arrive in Philly by 2:15 PM so that we may start by 2:45 PM. The mini-rally includes a walk around of the Liberty Bell and some brief words. Other branches include the Albany to Ridgefield/NYC line, and the Syracuse to Frederick line. Those from Syracuse may also wish to join us in Philly via Allentown. Those around Buffalo and Charleston could conceivably met up with the western portion of the Freedom Drive caravan on their way to the Howard County Fairgrounds. Numbers on the rendezvous points must change for there to be a stop… i.e. there is no stop between 1-A and 1-B but there is a stop between 1-C and 2-A. There are a lot of tolls on this route. We will work out rejoining the caravan at each rest area, depending on the number of cars. Weather may cause a cancellation of the Philadelphia rally.
